WELCOME TO THE MID-ATLANTIC HEARING EXPO

                                                     “State of the Industry”                                                               

Kate Carr joined the Hearing Industries Association (HIA) as President in May 2018. Kate brings extensive expertise in non-profit management, government, cause marketing and advocacy to HIA. An experienced leader, Kate has devoted her career to organizations that change outcomes in health care and improve the lives of children and families. She has served as an Assistant to the President in the Clinton White House, as President and CEO of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation, Managing Director of Malaria No More and President and CEO of Safe Kids Worldwide.

Kate started her career in politics in her home state of Pennsylvania. She moved to Washington, DC to work at the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee where she developed and directed diversified fundraising campaigns. In 1995 she joined the Clinton White House serving as Special Assistant to the President, Office of Public Liaison, responsible for maintaining relationships with CEOs, the Washington representative community, trade associations, small business owners and leaders.
After politics, Kate moved into the not-for-profit sector where she has continued her career for more than 20 years. Under her leadership, organizations have expanded health care programs in the United States and around the world, developed comprehensive marketing and brand awareness campaigns, and significantly expanded advocacy efforts at the global, federal and state levels.

Kate holds a BBA in Economics and Management from Temple University.


Patrick S. Kochanowski received his Bachelor of Science degree from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania, he is a Certified Audioprosthologist and is Nationally Board Certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences he owns a multi-unit Miracle-Ear Franchise and has over 27 years of dispensing experience. He is a Past President of the Pennsylvania Hearing Healthcare Association and is also the current President of the International Hearing Society.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
-FDA regulations for OTC devices, what to expect going forward
-Proposed Congressional approval of hearing aids dispensed/administered through Medicare
-The Federal Trade Commission-- -Unbundle Services?
-Do you stock OTC devices? — Will it be a Negative if you do not?

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
Participants will be able to summarize effectively where the FDA Regulations and Congressional approval for hearing aids through Medicare stand currently.
Participants will be able to describe 3 dynamic changes occurring in our Industry.
Participants will be able to demonstrate 3 ways to best position their individual practices to provide their patients with exceptional service and outcomes.

                                 "Issues in Cognition, Audition and Amplification 2023"


Dr. Beck began his career in Los Angeles at the House Ear Institute in cochlear implant research and intraoperative cranial nerve monitoring. By 1988, he was Director of Audiology at Saint Louis University. In 1996, he co-founded a multi office dispensing practice in St. Louis. In 1999, he became President & Editor – In – Chief of AudiologyOnline.com, SpeechPathology.com, and HealthyHearing.com. Dr. Beck joined Oticon in 2005. From 2008 through 2015 he also served as Web Content Editor for the American Academy of Audiology (AAA). In 2016 he also became Senior Editor for Clinical Research at the Hearing Review and also, Adjunct Clinical Professor of Communication Disorders & Sciences at SUNYAB. In 2019, he was appointed Vice President of Academic Sciences at Oticon in. Dr. Beck is among the most prolific authors in audiology with more than 211 publications. Although he officially retired from Oticon in March 2022, he became Vice President of Clinical Sciences for Cognivue, Inc., in Victor, NY in April of 2022. Dr. Beck continues to consult for a number of professional and private concerns. Hundreds of publications and videos are available at www.douglaslbeck.com.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will explore how and why cognition and audition are intimately interwoven. We will address the potential cognitive benefits of amplification as well as suggestions for measuring speech in noise and how to use that information to maximize success. We will address cognitive screeners, how to administer cognitive screeners and how to choose appropriate screeners for people with hearing loss. PDF hand outs and a Q & A session will be provided.

LEARNER OUTCOME: After this course, participants will be able to identify three cognitive screeners, compare and contrast three Speech in Noise tests, and describe when MCI starts to look more like dementia.


Presenter:      Brian Taylor, AuD., Signia, Inc.


          Reversing Apathy of Hearing Loss by Putting OTC to Work in Your Practice

Dr. Brian Taylor, is the Senior Director of Audiology for Signia. He serves as Editor – At – Large for Hearing Health and Technology Matters, a leading professional blog; and Editor of Audiology Practices, the quarterly publication of the Academy of Doctors of Audiology. He is also an adjunct professor at the university of Wisconsin. Dr. Taylor has authored numerous peer reviewed articles and books on topics ranging from hearing aids to practice management. His latest textbooks, Selecting and Fitting Hearing Aids and Relationship-Centered Communication for Audiologists were published in 2021.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will cover demographic insights, charging 
for unbundled services, triaging to determine OTC candidacy, & how to position OTC vs. prescriptive devices in your practice.

LEARNER OUTCOMES: After this course, participants will be able to define OTC hearing devices, describe how OTC hearing devices differ from prescription hearing aids, and identify candidates who otherwise would not receive in person hearing care and are likely to benefit from OTC devices.



Presenter: Gary Rosenblum, President of Oticon, Inc.

                                                 Hearing Aid Industry Update


Gary is responsible for driving Oticon’s innovation leadership and commercial excellence in the US. Prior to joining Oticon, Gary managed medical device and consumer healthcare businesses for companies such as Johnson & Johnson and Pfizer. Gary currently serves as Chairman for the Hearing Industries Association. He holds an M.B.A. from Cornell University and a B.A. from Washington University.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this course, Gary Rosenblum, President of Oticon, will present an industry update that will help hearing care providers understand how trends in the hearing care industry will impact their audiology practice, prepare them for macroeconomic factors that may impact the way patients will be treated by them in the future, and help HCPs determine how best to utilize new hearing aid technology to improve patient outcomes. Industry trends such as OTC and DTC , Medicare, Managed Care, Telehealth, and alternative business models will be discussed. Gary will also provide his perspective on the performance of the Hearing Aid Industry in 2022 and his outlook for 2023 and beyond.

LEARNER OUTCOMES: After this course participants will be able to analyze how trends in the hearing care industry will impact their audiology practice to better serve their patients. Participants will be able to identify macroeconomic factors that may impact the way patients will be treated by them in the future, and they will be able to identify how best to utilize new hearing aid technology to improve patient outcomes.



Presenter:     Kyle Acker, AuD.,  VP of US Commercial Sales, Starkey Hearing, Inc.

                      Clinical Efficiency in Fitting Devices with Advanced Features

As Vice President of U.S. Commercial Sales, Kyle Acker, AuD. leads Starkey’s U.S. Managing Directors and the sales team. Over the course of his career, Acker has invested time and talent in many aspects of the hearing industry, building an intimate understanding of the challenges providers face and how to support them in solving those challenges. He completed his B.S. in Industrial Hygiene and Organizational Leadership and Supervision and his M.S. and AuD. in Audiology at Perdue University in West Lafayette, IN.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Hearing instruments have more features and benefits to our patients than ever before. However, with all these new features comes some complexity in choosing the right features for your patients, engaging them in those new features, and working with your team to make the clinical delivery process as efficient as possible. In this session we will discuss how the begin with selection, engage the patient to get buy-in, and engage your office team to be as efficient as possible in service delivery.

LEARNER OUTCOME: After this presentation, the learner will be able to demonstrate how to use the readily available advanced feature tools to help them with feature selection. They will be able to describe to the patient those features to aid in compliance and utilization as well as being able to demonstrate the ways to engage the office team of clinical, extenders, and clerical staff to offer the best, most efficient patient experience.



Presenter: Jason Mayer, Sonova, Inc.

                              How to make better decisions in a time of upheaval.


Originally from London, England, Jason earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics at the University of York, and furthered his executive education at the Management School of St Gallen in Switzerland, and INSEAD in Paris, France. He has worked in the hearing healthcare industry for 19 years and considers himself a ‘lifer’. He has 2 noisy girls, Harriet and Martha, and is married to Jody who has the patience of a saint.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will discuss the ongoing changes in the hearing aid industry with OTC Regulations and the increasing number of third-party providers. Additionally, we will discuss several ways to efficiently and effectively prepare you to position your practice to take advantage of the opportunities ahead.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
As a result of this course the participant will be able to:
1- Identify their own cognitive biases as leaders and decision makers.
2- Demonstrate how those biases can lead them to make poor decisions about their business and clinical               performance.
3- Identify the value of determining the root cause of any business/clinical performance gaps.
4- Demonstrate how to build countermeasures that will address the identified gaps

                                   Elder Abuse and How it Affects Your Practice

COURSE DESCRIPTION: As the population ages in the U.S., cases of elder abuse are on the rise. Families, caregivers are stretched to the breaking point and resources are scarce. The recent mandated periods of social isolation have increased the prevalence faced by the elderly by as much as 84%. To be able to reduce the effects of elder abuse, healthcare professionals need to be able to identify and report these issues.

LEARNER OUTCOMES:
The student will be able to define and identify “elder abuse” in their HA practice.
The student will be able to identify the 7 prevalent types of elder abuse.
The student will be able to describe the “warning signs” and possible causes.
The student will be able to compare and contrast various assessment methods and what professionals can do      to assist their patients to identify and prevent elder abuse in their practice.
